Alba Rosae

I have always love white roses, I find them to be very elegant and most especially very romantic. My mother made me fall in love with them, she adored white, in fact she used to tailor wedding dresses. She had furnished our house with mostly white items but some colour was never missing as she always had flowers around. At times when she would come home with some white roses I would spend long amounts of time just staring at them in their vase, almost as if they had a hypnotic power to them, then I would end up making a simple drawing of them that I would always eventually give my mum.Nowadays, being an artist that portrays nature I can't not dedicate an artwork to those precious flowers. The ones you see portrayed in this drawing are a variety of old English roses with an enormous amount of petals that resemble little bouquets.I chose them because while they're surely beautiful white roses, it's incredible to see how little blossoms stem from the shade of intense pink and as the calyx flourishes, they fade to a pale pink until they finally become white. A luminous white that warms the heart which give these a peculiar charm that makes them almost magical. This drawing took about three months to complete. I put a lot of care into every shade with different layers of colour in order for the roses to maintain their natural beauty. The title Alba Rosae is latin for “White Roses” and it was recommended to me by my secondborn who at the time was doing classical studies.

It all started when my mom passed away.

I was on a break from my work in theatres and not going through a very serene period.

One day my son Nazareno said that he had spare sketchbook that his art teacher told him was no longer needed for school projects, so he asked if I wanted to use it.

I thought I could have used it to sketch scenographies for work so I simply tucked it in a cupboard. After some time I opened the same cupboard again and saw that very sketchbook next to my precious Caran d'Ache pencils and … that's when I thought of drawing something. Yes but, what to draw then?
